I am a linguist and I am interested in language and linguistics. So I found me asking myself as to whether Konkani is a dialect of Marathi or an independent language by itself.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">After giving much though to the issue, I arrived at the following conclusion: If tongues were to be graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with a full fledged language like Hindi, Marathi, etc. placed at 10 and any dialect at 5, Konkani would find its place at 7.5; Not 5, hence not a dialect and not 10 hence not a fully developed language. Why so? Why could Konkani not become a fully developed language? The reasons are obvious. <b>People used Konkani only for oral communication but when it came to writing, the people in pre-Portuguese Goa wrote in Marathi.</b> During the Portuguese regime, the Christian converts used Portuguese for written communication, while the Goan hindus continued to use Marathi. As a result of this, the development of Konkani suffered a set back. Hence, 7.5 instead of 10. But definitely not 5 (a dialect).</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Having or not having a script is not the criterion in deciding whether a tongue is a dialect or an independent language. Even English (bestowed with the honour of being an international language) had to borrow the Roman script from Latin. Russian and other Slav languages has no script till St Cyril formulated for them the CyrillicAlphabet (being a mixture of Greek and Roman scripts) And for those who are ignorant, Konkani has not one but 6 scripts – Roman, Devnagari, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and A rabic! Because Konkani is spoken all along the Konkan coast which lies in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala besides Goa. It is difficult to adopt any one of these scripts for Konkani because in each state, Konkani imbibes the accent and the vocabulary peculiar to that state/region which can be denoted only in that script e.g.The e sound cannot be denoted in Devanagari which is possible in Roman (e) or Kannada scripts ( ).</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Coming to the vocabulary, as Konkani is one of the several daughters of the mother language Sanskrit, there are bound to be similarities as there are in Hindi / Marathi / Gujarati / Punjabi, etc. or Bengali / Oriya / Assamese etc. So this cannot be considered to be a ground for labeling Konkani as a dialect of Marathi. Even the syntax among most Indian languages is more or less similar. Hence, it is safe to conclude that while Konkani may not be as advanced as Marathi, it is not as underdeveloped to be considered a mere dialect.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Talking about choosing a script for Konkani, it is pertinent to recall that Kemal Pasha of Turkey changed the script of Turkish from Arabic to Roman. According to him, both Turkey and Turkish would develop if Roman script was adopted. The outcome is history. Personally, I feel the same holds for Konkani in Goa too. And I am not saying this because I am a Goan or Catholic but because circumstances so warrant. 450 years of Portuguese rule, using the Roman script for writing Konkani, the language's pronunciation and accent modified over the centuries makes it difficult for us now, to be writing in the Devnagari script. And believe me, if Konkani is to develop, it will do so only if the Roman script is adopted. While on this, special mention must be made of the valuable contribution made by the Vauraddeancho lxtt in the development of the Konkani language.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">To write Konkani in the Roman script was taught to us by the Portuguese. Hence, they followed the Portuguese (Latin) rules of orthography (spelling) eg. Using 'c' or 'qu' instead of 'k', 'x' for 'sh', the grave, cedilla, circumflex and tilde accents and avoiding 'w' and 'y'. Some newspapers like the 'Goa Times' circulating in Bombay used this style of spelling. Eg. 'Conn' instead of 'Konn', 'quitem' for 'kitem' so on. The Vauraddencho lxtt adopted certain rules for spelling Konkani words and this, consistently over the years or decades. This consistency has given a certain stability to Konkani orthography. It is widely accepted, recognized and used eg. in liturgicalworks by the Church, etc. and for this standardization, the Vauraddeancho lxtt deserves a big award from the Konkani speaking people for its valuable contribution to the development of konkani by giving a definite shape, a regularised spelling for Konkani's vocabulary. A contribution over the years, consistently and unstinted. Editors may come and go, but the crystallization has set in and this makes the paper stand out with authentic spelling.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">But there is a flip side too. Over the years, the vocabulary has undergone a drastic change. Try comparing an issue of the newspaper of the 1970's with one of today. While the spelling (orthography) has standardised, the language has become more and more marathisized. Authentic Konkani words have come to be replaced by marathi derivated eg. 'fikir' instead of 'usko' 'Khali' for 'rito', etc. and this pains a true lover of the Konkani language. Agreed, we need to develop Konkani, but in this way? Do we have to konkanise marathi words and use them? And then when an onlooker reads this, he is bound to get the impression (like my Maharashtrian friend) that Konkani is a dialect of Marathi and that it does not have its own full-fledged vocabulary to express ideas.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">I would like to end this piece by telling those who do not know that the eminent linguist, Dalgado, who is accredited with compiling the first Konkani dictionary, had, after much research, come to the conclusion that "Concanim nao e o dialecto de Marathi". </div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />

Specially with the people of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Goa and Karnataka. Few years back me and my friends Vishal Kumar from Manglore, Sachin Patwardhan from Ratnagiri, Hrishikesh Prabhu from kudal, Ganesh from Karwar started a blog http://konkanionline.blogspot.com/ to unite all konkani's from different states. Our Konkani language have different flavors still we manage to understand wat others r speaking. </div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;">When I listen Vishal's Manglore Konkani I understood everything. Same with the Vishal, he understood everything which I told him in Malvani. Cross border Communication is very important. Chitpavani and Malvani are very similar like sisters. Where Muslim Konkani and Bhandari Konkani are also same. As per the Kalelkar Classification which is standard classification, Konkani is classified in three types Southern Konkani, Central Konkani and Northern Konkani. Chitpavani, Malvani, Sngmeshwari, Agari, Muslim, bhandari konkani are the subtypes of Northern Konkani which are very similar in nature. Chitpavan Brahmin left ther language many years back. They adopted Marathi. But still other castes people speaks konkani (different dialects in different regions) in ther home. </div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">In same way in south India tulu and kodava people have started adopting kannada,. badaga , toda and kota people are adopting tamil this is because these laguages are not recognized and these languages are treated as tribal languages …</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So if we take Konkani, its also in same condition bcoz konkan region is geographical distributed in different states , Konkanis in maharastra have adopted marathi and thet feel shy and low in the society if they speak their Konkani dialect like sangameshwari and malwani and they think by speaking marathi keep up their standard..</div><a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">For ex the younger generation chitpavans even doesn’t know that there is a language called chitpavani which is a dialect of Konkani and they proudly say that they are marathis not only chitpavans even gsb , rsb , daivadnya and many Konkani speakers call themselves as marathis that’s the reason year by year marathi language census is increasing and Konkani is decreasing .. In ratngiri and sindudurg there are 8 lakh people but census board has mentioned that there are only 45 thousand malwani speakers , this is because Konkanis don’t know that malwani is a dialect of Konkani …</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">As every one knows goa is called as Konkani state but in goa there are more number of marathi schools than Konkani medium schools, there are is no Konkani national doordarshan channel in t.v, no Konkani F.Ms, even in temples hindu Konkanis do prayers in marathi and with marathi population of goa , konkanis converse with marathi and not in Konkani…. It looks like respecting someones mother in their own mother land…</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">If we take this issue in Karnataka , Konkani is in good state but south canara konkanis like to speak local langues in public places thats the reason Konkani is written in kannada script and they don’t have that attachment like all konkanis are one they like to call themselves as mangloreans . but in every household we here only Konkani but todays younger generation don’t converse in Konkani with other Konkani caste , they like to speak in tulu , kannada and Malayalam in public with other Konkani pals… </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Actually in undivided south canra( mangalore , udupi and kasargod ) Konkanis are working hard for the upliftment of Konkani language even they are staying in tulunadu region .. but north canra is homeland of Konkanis where Konkani is common language spoken in public but then also people are not much concentrating on Konkani..</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Konkani is dying because konkanis are changing their mother tongue like Catholics have started speaking English , nawayath muslims are adopting urdu , chitrapura saraswats are using kannada , ..</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This should be stopped as early as possible otherwise in few years Konkani will extinguish from this world… I request all konkanis to speak in Konkani and even teach Konkani to their children and use Konkani wherever necessary , it may be any dialect try to understand , read kokani magazines , books , ask your children to take Konkani as one of their subjects in school, avoid marrying out of Konkani caste , konkani is beautifull language lets conserve it , develop it and proudly call it as our mother tongue …</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4354064423815551877.post-19937218927951527832010-06-24T12:13:00.000+05:302010-06-24T12:13:09.050+05:30गणपतीचो नैवेदयपारंपारीक गणपतीचो नैवेदय <br />

Many people adopting <b>Marathi </b>and dont aware that <b>konkani </b>is ther own language. First thing I want to clear that we are not against any language. We will try to spread <b>konkani </b>with respect to other Indian languages. Don't keep any doubt about our mission. We are not here to demand separate konkani country. We are proud of our country. So please don't keep any <b>misunderstanding</b> about our mission. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Konkani</b> have many dialects. Like Malvani is konkani's most spoken dialect in Sindhudurg and Rajapur. To save konkani and it dielects and to keep konkani under one <b>umbrella </b>we have started new blog. This new blog have writers from all region like Ratnagiri,Sindhudurg,Goa and North Canara. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Now I will try to explain about our mission. <b>We are not here to divide country</b>. Language is identity of every community. If you want to save country first you have to save your own language. India is the country of several cultures and languages. If you are not giving respect to your own language then how u can respect your country ? We feels that all Indian languages (authorized by Sahitya Academy ) must have same status. Now we have different states like Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka each state have its own language. </div><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
We are trying to save our language. We have respect about all Indian languages. Take my example I have my own blog <a href="http://marathisamuday.blogspot.com/">"Marathi Samuday"</a> which is very famous in <b>Marathi</b> language. I have 2 blogs and 3 websites in <b>English</b>. Because I am professor of Engineering I have to use English in academics. I have written 2-3 articles in <b>Hindi</b> for my website. I have 3 publications for conferences in English. At my hometown I speak <b>Malvani</b> which is dialect of <b>konkani</b>.<br />
<br />
At the end of the day I am proud of my own language i.e. konkani, my cultural language i.e. Marathi, my professional language i.e. English and official language of India i.e. Hindi. If you want to save your own language there is no need to hate other languages. We can save konkani without hate. <br />
<br />
Important thing is that, It is <b>practice</b> which makes man perfect. You can become perfect in every language. Take example of former Prime Ministers of India Indira Gandhi and Narasinh Rao. Both were masters of 13 Indian languages. And if any Indian language is in danger then every Indian should help to save that language. So on this blog I expects help from every Indian to save konkani. You will ask what is the need of blog to save konkani? We want to keep konkani speaking people united. To improve language , to help each other , to construct modern nation. Thats why we are writing here. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div>Waman bold;">CANARA KONKANI</span> is broadly divided into North Canara and South Canara konkani. These are the two regions where konkani is spoken in Karnataka. Now south canara is divided into 3 districts namely udupi to the north , south canara in the middle and kasargod in the south, kasargod was taken by kerala while the Indian states were reorganized according to linguistic basis. These three districts are called as Tulunadu. So as the konkanis here trilingual, here konkanis who stay in karnataka part of tulunadu can speak tulu and kannada whereas the people who stay in kerala part of tulunadu can speak tulu, malayalam and even kannada.
<br />
<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">South canara</span> is districts name , the Mangalore or Kodiyal ( called by konkanis ) is the headquaters of south canara. All konkanis in tulunadu or undivided south canara region know more than 3 langauges but in every konkani house we can hear only konkani thats makes the konkanis proud to call themselves as konkanis in karnataka.
<br /><a name='more'></a>
<br />
<br />
<br />As like south canara is home land of tuluvas <span style="font-weight: bold;">North Canara district</span> is home land of konkanis nearly 32 varities of konkani caste we can find here, this district is just below the state of goa , the head quaters is karwar which is 20 km south of goa and karnataka border. it is divided into 11 taluks , the coastal taluks and 2 taluk adjoining goa border has 80 to 60 % of konkanis i.e (karwar, ankola, kumta, honnavar ,bhatkal, joida and haliyal) compared to western ghats taluks which has 30 to 40 % of konkanis i.e (sirsi, yellapur, siddapur, mundgod).
<br />
<br />Other than canara districts we can find <span style="font-weight: bold;">konkanis </span>even in western ghats districts which is called as malenadu region in karnataka. This region covers the districts like shimoga, chikmagalur , hassan and kodagu(coorg). Even we can find many konkanis in <span style="font-weight: bold;">Bangalore</span> who have moved from canara distrcits for the <span style="font-weight: bold;">sake of job</span> and <span style="font-weight: bold;">study purpose</span>.
<br />
<br />So <span style="font-weight: bold;">Canara Konkani</span> is divided into many varities like <span style="font-weight: bold;">North Canara Konkani </span>which has <span style="font-weight: bold;">kannada</span> influence , South canara and Udupi has <span style="font-weight: bold;">tulu </span>influence and whereas <span style="font-weight: bold;">kasargod konkani</span> has <span style="font-weight: bold;">Malayalam</span> influence. Not only region even each caste or religion has its own dialect, but one thing which i am proud to say that mostly 9<span style="font-weight: bold;">9 % of canara konkanis</span> call themselves as <span style="font-weight: bold;">konkanis</span> and even they speak konkani in their houses... this is the special about canara konkanis.

<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
